21 Tips To Speak English Confidently

Do you struggle to speak English confidently too? It’s a very common problem most English students face.

Just this afternoon, I was just talking with an English teacher. He came by and asked me to help him improve his speaking skills because he is scared to speak in English.

“David, I’m afraid I’ll make a mistake. I have to resolve this problem because I teach in the best private schools in the city, as well as the university.” he said.

So, I’ve been thinking about this problem and ways to help you overcome this challenge.

And today I want to share…

21 Tips To Boost Your English Speaking Confidence

When you strengthen your confidence, you’ll be a happier English speaker.

Confidence in yourself and your speaking abilities will equip you to begin speaking English confidently.

So, here we go…

1. Believe In Yourself And Your Ability To Speak English

Speaking English confidently starts with you believing that you can learn to speak a new language. You already learned how to speak your mother tongue.

So, you know that you have all the abilities necessary to learn a second language like English, as well as any other languages you want.

Just like when you were a child developing your skills. Learning new words and how to use them to express yourself.

If you did it then, you can do it now.

You just have to believe in yourself and just do it.

2. Ask For Help

Seek help from others when you’re struggling. Draw from the expertise of others when you lack the knowledge you need. The ability to admit you need help is a sign of strength.

Find someone who can help you with the issues you are facing and ask them to give you a hand.

  • Do you need help developing your vocabulary or improving your pronunciation? Find a good teacher.
  • Do you know how to speak, but you just need some confidence? Find a good coach.

Or just develop a network of friends and people you trust enough to practice with.

3. Look At The Big Picture

Oftentimes, we focus on the obstacles and problems in our way, instead of focusing on the destination.

Instead of focusing on your lack of confidence, think about your reasons for wanting to learn English.

  • How will speaking English confidently improve your life professionally and personally?
  • How will it improve the quality of your life?

Focusing on the improvements that you will gain by learning to communicate better…can give you a strong enough reason to overcome your fear and lack of confidence.

Keep the bigger picture in mind as you practice what you learn.

It will keep you from getting caught up on the smaller issues of worry and shame.

4. Take Control of Your English Learning And Start Practicing

Choose to seize the steering wheel of life, instead of sitting in the passenger seat.

Don’t wait for confidence to come to you. Go out and grab confidence by the throat and make it help you.

Choose a topic that you want to talk about. Study and learn how to express yourself.

  • Learn the vocabulary you need
  • Study basic sentence structures
  • Improve your pronunciation
  • Learn some expressions to help the flow

Just like what you learn with the mini-story lessons and dialogues in the VIP English Club

Then practice what you want to say.

Next, go find someone to practice speaking with.

Instead of waiting for confidence to find you, begin studying and speaking English purposefully.

Pretend you’re confident, and the feelings will soon follow.

5. Concentrate On Your Strengths

Everyone has both strengths and weaknesses.

Find out what your English speaking strengths are and focus on enhancing those characteristics.

  • I have a student who is very good at learning new vocabulary. He never forgets a word.
  • Other people have good pronunciation.

So, when you speak…focus on what you already do well.

You don’t have to speak like anyone else.

Just focus on expressing yourself clearly.

Then keep studying and practice to improve in the areas that you still need to work on.

6. Focus On The Little Things

Learning to speak English is a big goal. So, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

Especially, when you think of all the things you feel you don’t know and still have to learn.

When that happens, just focus on the next thing you need to learn.

What is the next thing you want to learn how to say?

And tackle that one thing at a time in a step-by-step fashion.

Little by little, each success you experience builds a reservoir of confidence inside you.

7. Stop Negative Thoughts

When you are overwhelmed, it’s easy to get frustrated.

Then a whole flood of negative thoughts enter your mind.

When that happens, notice them and replace them with more productive ones.

Dwell on thoughts that lead you to success.

8. Get To Know Yourself And Your English Speaking Skills

Many times, students feel frustrated because they don’t see progress.

They don’t feel like they are developing.

It’s just like working out at the gym. Sometimes you need a friend or a personal trainer to help push you through to the next level.

Because when you are caught up in the struggle of the moment, they can see things you can’t.

By studying yourself and getting insights from others, you’ll be better able to point out and work on your strengths and weaknesses.

  • You can play to your strengths
  • And build up your weak areas

As you work on the areas you have trouble with, you’ll begin to see improvements and observe progress.

9. Think Positively About Your English Learning Skills

So, if you stop thinking negative thoughts, and focus on improving yourself…

It’s time to start filling your mind with positive thoughts about your English speaking.

Challenge yourself to think positive thoughts each and every day.

If you stay positive, confidence will come.

10. Talk To Yourself In English

There are two parts to this.

One, use positive self-talk to boost your confidence.

That means you use personal, positive, present-tense affirmations that speak words of encouragement to your heart and mind.

Not just positive thoughts about learning English…but about you as a person.

Positive affirmations of you…both personally and professionally.

Not just that you are capable of speaking English confidently…but that you can do anything you want in life.

  • Of living your dreams
  • Of being successful
  • Of achieving your goals

Two, talk to yourself in English. It’s another way to practice and develop your skills.

If you don’t feel confident enough to speak with other people, then practice talking with yourself in front of the mirror.

Observe the things you want to say, but don’t know how yet. Then go learn how to say them.

Speaking with yourself, will help you to practice and build up the confidence to speak English with other people.

One simple way to do this is with the mini-stories you can learn in the VIP English Club.

  • Read and study the mini-stories to understand them.
  • Then listen to them to learn the pronunciation.
  • Finally, practice retelling them in your own words.

Tell the story to yourself until you feel confident with the vocabulary and pronunciation.

That way, when you speak with others, you will have something to tell them and talk about.

11. Just Relax And Enjoy Speaking With Others

Enjoy what you have already learned and what you already know how to say.

You’ve learned a lot and come a long way.

All you have to do now is improve your skills a little bit more.

So, when you feel pressured to speak too much all at once, slow down and take a few deep breaths.

Sometimes, all it takes to feel confident is a few seconds to relax and refocus your mind.

12. Practice Your English Everyday

Practice makes perfect…and permanent.

So, the more you learn and practice…the more confident you will be when you speak English.

If you’re struggling to learn how to say things in English and express yourself better…

Just keep trying until you get it right. This may take time, but the effort is worth it.

13. Challenge Yourself To Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone

Lack of confidence isn’t always a bad thing.

It just means that you are stepping out of your comfort zone in favor of something more exciting.

You are learning new ways to express your ideas.

You are talking to people you never would have talked with before.

So, embrace the feeling of ‘unconfidence’…

And push yourself into new places because you know that you are growing and improving yourself immensely.

There is another simple way to do this. Instead of just retelling the stories in the VIP English Club, you can modify them to make up your won stories.

Once you have enough structure, you can talk about yourself and tell your own stories to other people in English.

14. Change Your Behaviors To Improve Your English Skills

If you want to make major changes in your life…it’s normal to feel nervous.

But as you change your perspectives and adjust your behaviors…

You will start to feel confidence settle in.

So, start off small.

  • Talk to yourself
  • Practice chatting with robots online
  • Speak with very close friends who are learning English too
  • Chat with people by typing so you have time to look up words you don’t know
  • Finally, move on to actually speaking with them via Skype

Just keep changing your approach until you start getting the results you deserve.

15. Start Your Day Off Right To Prepare for Speaking

Get everything off to the right start by getting into a positive mood right from the beginning of the day.

Plan your day the night before by deciding what you want to learn how to say.

Then start working on it as soon as you get going the next morning.

Develop a daily routine of learning new words and expressions to say what you want.

And don’t forget to get enough rest and eat a healthy breakfast.

16. Smile More Frequently When You Speak English

When you do speak with other people, put a smile on your face.

You’ve heard the expression, “Fake it till you make it”. Right?

Well, try it. Just relax and enjoy yourself.

And you’ll be surprised at how you end up feeling as a result.

17. Engage In Random Acts of Kindness To Speak English

If you don’t feel comfortable just talking with random strangers…because you don’t know what to say.

Then look for opportunities to help people.

Just a simple offer to help will make them very willing to talk with you.

Then let them start talking and the conversation will flow naturally.

  • Help elderly people who speak English.
  • Help people who want to learn English.

Even if you don’t know a lot, you can still teach them some of the things you’ve learned so far.

Do what you can to bring about more joy in the lives of others and enjoy the feeling it gives you.

18. Accept Compliments About Your English Speaking Skills

Learn how to accept compliments when you speak English.

Most students feel shy when beginning to speak English.

So, when someone compliments them, they deny it and say their English isn’t good.

Of course it’s not perfect.

You are learning.

But you have learned a lot since you started.

And most people are likely being genuine with you.

So, just relax and thank them for their kind comments.

And let it boost your feeling of being able to speak English confidently.

19. Express Gratitude For The People Who Help You Learn English

Express gratitude for the things that are important to you.

It will make you feel better.

And you’ll experience renewed energy and enthusiasm.

Also, be grateful for the people in your life who are helping your learn English.

  • Your teacher
  • Your classmates
  • Your family if they help you pay for your English course
  • The people who speak English with you

The more grateful you are…the more people will want to help you.

20. Stick Up For Yourself When Others Laugh At Your English

Okay! Even though we’ve mentioned that a lot of good people will help you.

There are some people who are negative.

And even when you do a very good job…they will still try to find something to criticize.

When I was learning French last year, some of my classmates would laugh at me.

But I studied hard and tried to speak every time I had the opportunity.

The students who laughed at me spoke worse then I did.

They weren’t courageous enough to speak…so they would point out my mistakes and laugh at me.

You just have to learn how to recognize these people and stand up for yourself.

Don’t let their negativity or criticism overpower you or drag you down.

When that happens, just remind them that you are still learning and you aren’t perfect.

Then remember to be grateful, and thank them for correcting you.

21. Strive For Excellence Instead of Perfection

Remember that everyday you are learning more and more.

But you aren’t perfect yet.

So, simply try to do your best…and then improve a bit more.

If you continue to try your best and change your approach when things seem to be headed in the wrong direction, your confidence will grow naturally.
